A Lakefront Wedding with a Chicago Point of View
Some wedding venues provide the backdrop. Others become part of the celebration.
Theatre on the Lake is one of those rare Chicago wedding venues where the architecture, Lake Michigan, and skyline naturally work together to create a setting that feels unmistakably Chicago. With expansive windows overlooking the water, strong architectural lines, and its signature green structural beams, the venue gave us an incredible foundation for a wedding floral design that could be both romantic and distinctly connected to the city.
For this celebration, our floral design was about more than centerpieces. We wanted to create a complete visual experience throughout the room—bringing flowers into the architecture, softening the space with greenery, and creating intimate moments within the larger lakefront setting.
One of the most exciting elements of this wedding was creating custom floral arches onsite. Rather than bringing in a single statement installation and leaving the rest of the outdoor ceremony untouched, we used the architecture of the venue as a starting point for the floral design.
The arches created structure and the wind really tested out structure strength! Greenery and flowers were intentionally placed to feel abundant without blocking the beautiful views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline.
This balance was important. When your venue has a view like this, the flowers should enhance it—not compete with it.
A Romantic Palette of Lilac & Green
The couple selected a palette of soft lilacs, romantic florals, and lush greens, creating a color story that felt elegant without being overly traditional.
The lilac tones brought softness and a subtle touch of color, while the greenery added depth and texture throughout the room. We carried the palette across the floral arrangements so that the design felt cohesive from one end of the space to the other.
Rather than making every arrangement identical, we layered different floral moments throughout the venue. This created visual interest and made the room feel collected and designed rather than overly uniform.
One of our favorite details was the addition of lamps and warm lighting, which shifted the feeling of the space as the celebration moved into the evening. Against the greenery, florals, and deep architectural elements of the venue, the lighting created a warm, intimate atmosphere with almost a classic Chicago steakhouse feel.
It gave the reception a sense of warmth and sophistication while still feeling relaxed and welcoming.
The beauty of designing a wedding at Theatre on the Lake is that you don’t have to manufacture a sense of place. It’s already there.
The lake. The skyline. The architecture. The changing light. The unmistakable feeling of Chicago.
Our role was to bring those elements together through flowers and décor, creating a celebration that felt personal to the couple while remaining connected to the character of the venue.
From the custom onsite floral arches to the layered reception flowers, greenery, warm lamps, and romantic lilac palette, every detail was designed to work together as one experience.
The result was a Chicago lakefront wedding that felt romantic, warm, architectural, and distinctly its own—with Lake Michigan and the city skyline quietly becoming part of the celebration.
